Chapter 19: The Prince in the Cell
Pia had already bribed the guard.
She did it with a purse from her apron and the speech she must have been saving all her life.
"Ten minutes," the man said, unlocking the iron door under the east wing. "I never saw you."
"You never did," Pia agreed. "You have a nice face. Keep it that way."
The stair went down into the dark, and the air turned wet and cold.
At the bottom, one lamp burned in a bracket.
Corradin sat on the stone bench of the last cell with his wrists in iron.
His black coat was gone.
He wore only a shirt, torn at the shoulder, and the bruise from Tobin's fist had gone purple along his jaw.
He lifted his head as we came to the bars.
"You are not supposed to be here," he said.
"Neither are you," I said. "Not like this."
"Montalban found a letter in my room."
"Whose letter?"
"Mine, in a forger's hand, offering the king of Kaldmark the key to your treasury."
He turned his chained wrists in the lamplight.
"It was good work. I would have believed it myself."
"I'm getting you out."
