Chapter 20: The Midsummer Feast
The Midsummer feast began at noon, because Montalban wanted a wedding by sunset.
Four hundred guests sat at long tables under the painted ceiling.
There were lords in silk and ladies with flowers in their hair, and the smell of roast lamb filled the hall.
Nobody ate much.
Everyone watched the high table, where my father sat grey and silent, with Montalban at his right hand.
A guard stood behind each of them.
Another held Corradin in a chair at the foot of the dais, his wrists still chained.
I sat at the end of the high table in my green riding coat.
I had not worn the blue gown.
Tobin sat beside me with his hand under the table closed on mine.
"Now," I murmured.
Pia had slipped out of the hall an hour ago.
When Montalban rose to propose his toast, she was standing at the back door beside a broad man with a scar across his nose.
"To peace," Montalban said, lifting his cup. "To the treaty, and to the happy bride."
"I have something to say first," I said.
I stood up.
The hall went quiet in a long wave, from the high table to the doors.
