Chapter 4: Terms

I found Caelen that evening in the stable yard, checking a horse's hoof by lantern light.

I had a bag of borrowed clothes over my shoulder and I'd made up my mind.

"I'm leaving," I said.

He set the hoof down and straightened up.

"Where to?"

"Anywhere. Town. A bus station. I'll find work, and I'll stay off your land."

"There's a bus on Thursdays."

"It's Tuesday."

"Then you'd wait two days on a road where any Crown wolf who sees you is bound to report a rogue." He wiped his hands on a rag. "And in two days, the elders will see you aren't under my roof and they'll change their minds about the solstice."

"That's blackmail."

"It's a schedule."

I almost laughed, and hated that I almost did.

"You can't keep me here," I said.

"No."

"Then what do you want?"

"I want you alive." He said it plainly. "And I want to know who put that silver in your back."

I turned my shoulder away from him.

The wall of the stable yard was cold stone, and I leaned on it.

"I'm a guest," I said. "You said so in front of the council."

"You are."

"Guests can leave."

"If you walk out of here, I can't stop you. But I can't answer for you either. The old law is the law." He let that sit. "Stay until the solstice and learn to use the thing in you. Harlan will train you. You'll be safe in the valley, and after the solstice you can go wherever you like with a Crown letter in your pocket that says you aren't a rogue."
