Chapter 28: First Words
Leland watched his uncle walk out of the courtroom.
Then he turned to me.
"Three o'clock," he said. "Your call. Term one."
I didn't need to write it.
I nodded.
I spent the next four hours not saying a word.
Gran made me honey water in a thermos and checked every half hour that I hadn't touched my phone.
Lexi sat with me in the back of the car and talked enough for both of us.
At two thirty, in the elevator at Halstead Marine, I hummed one note under my breath.
It came.
The boardroom was on the top floor, with glass walls looking out over the whole office.
By ten to three, nobody out there was pretending to work.
Eight directors sat around a long table under a framed photo of Leland's father on a container dock.
The uncle sat at the head of it, in his father's old chair.
He looked comfortable and well-fed.
"Leland," he said. "And the wife. And my mother."
He glanced at Gran in her navy suit and red sneakers.
"Is this a board meeting or a family reunion?"
