Chapter 14: Pippa's Terms
I knew where she was before the nurse finished talking.
Domenico offered to come, and I told him no, and I was out the door before he could argue.
Our mother used to take us to the end of the Washington Avenue pier on Sunday afternoons, to watch the ships come up the Delaware.
It was five in the morning now, and the river was the color of a nickel.
Pippa sat on the last bench with her feet up, in a hospital sweatshirt two sizes too big, holding a paper cup in both hands.
She didn't turn around.
"You walked here," I said.
"I took a cab. Then I walked. The cab driver cried when I said I was sick, so I tipped him forty dollars I don't have."
I sat down on the cold slats beside her.
Out on the water a long container ship slid by with all its lights on, going somewhere without any hurry.
"Mom would have known I'd be here," she said.
"Mom would have been on the bench already, with a thermos."
"She'd have yelled."
"She'd have yelled and then handed you the thermos."
