Chapter 10: The Terrace

Mickey pushed past her and out of the walk-in.

He didn't stop until the elevator doors closed on fifty-two.

Santino was on the terrace.

Two in the morning, October wind coming off the lake.

He stood at the railing in his shirtsleeves and his gloves, a glass of soda water going flat in his hand.

Mickey walked straight out to him.

"Kelli's going to swear she saw you do it."

Santino turned around.

"Say that again."

"She cornered me in the walk-in. She said Nunzio says you poisoned your father, and she'll swear she saw you."

Santino put the glass down on the railing very carefully.

"And what did you say?"

"I told her she didn't know me."

"That's not what I asked."

The wind was cold enough to make Mickey's eyes water.

"Where were you at 12:14?" he said.

Santino went completely still.

"You were in the lounge," Mickey said. "Three soda waters. The third one at 12:05."

"And then I didn't see you again until you were standing in your office in the dark."

"You think I poisoned my father."

"I think you lie for a living."

Santino laughed, once, short.

"I lie for a living."

"You knew about Kelli and Nunzio. I asked you in the car, and you waited a whole second before you answered."

"You weren't surprised about the lemon. You've got a keycard to the server room."

"And you grabbed a bartender nobody's ever heard of and told your whole family he's yours, and I still don't know why."

"To keep you alive."

"Why do you care if I'm alive?"

"Because I've watched you for five years."

That stopped Mickey.

Santino took a step toward him.

"Five years, Mickey. Five years of you singing under your breath when you think nobody's listening."
