Chapter 22: Tell Me What I Drank
Mickey sat down in the chair where Santino had sat for nine days.
It was still pushed close to the bed.
"Your rye," he said. "Rittenhouse, neat, two fingers, 11:58. Same as every night for thirty years. I poured it."
The Don closed his eyes.
"Go on."
So Mickey gave him his own table, and only the part of it that mattered.
His son on the left with a soda water and lime.
His nephew at the end, with two Campari sodas.
The Don's eyes opened.
"Campari soda," he said.
"Two. The first night in five years he didn't order his Negroni with lemon."
The Don looked at the ceiling for a long moment.
"Every Friday," he said. "Lemon. I used to tease him. I said only a man with no taste puts lemon on a Negroni."
"At 12:14 somebody rang a Negroni with lemon into the service well. Under Kelli's login. The well makes them with crushed ice. I make mine with one cube and an orange."
"It was bitter," the Don said. "I thought it was the lemon."
"It was digoxin."
The Don's hand moved on the sheet, toward the rail where the plastic bag had been taped, the one with his gold ring in it.
