"Then it doesn't fail," Mickey said.
He shut the door on Santino before the man could see his hands.
Tuesday night at nine he unlocked the Forty-One with the capo's brass key.
The lights came up on a room that had been dark for four weeks.
Dust on the bottles. A dead lime in the well. The birthday slideshow screen still rolled down in the lounge, stuck on a photo of the Don at forty in a white suit.
His staff came in behind him without being asked.
He went back to dry storage for oranges.
The barback was sitting on the lemon crate with his elbows on his knees.
He looked up at Mickey like he was going to be sick.
"There's something else," the kid said.
"Okay."
"The Monday the license got pulled, she called me in. Kelli. She gave me a thing in a towel and a hundred bucks and told me to throw it in the lake."
He stood up off the crate.
He lifted the lid.
Under the top layer of lemons, wrapped in a bar towel, was a black drive the size of a paperback.
