Chapter 27: Sanding the Bar

On Wednesday morning Mickey put Kelli's check in the bank on Archer Avenue.

The teller read the back of it twice.

Then she looked at him.

"Big day," she said.

"You have no idea."

At noon the widow came down in her cardigan and slippers and sat on the third stool at Heffernan's.

Mickey put a lease on the bar in front of her.

Five years. His name. His own money.

She didn't read it.

She held out her hand, palm up.

"Eleven hundred dollars," she said.

He laid it out on his grandfather's wood, in twenties, from the top of the envelope.

"Paid in full," he said. "From my father."

She folded the bills into her cardigan pocket and signed without her glasses.

"He was a terrible tenant," she said. "Your mother was a saint. Go open my bar."

Then she told him she was going to her sister's in Beverly for the winter, because the stairs were killing her.

"The flat upstairs is yours too. Water the plant."

There was no plant.

Mickey watered the radiator, to be safe.

Thursday he was at the green door at seven with coffee and a box of sandpaper.
