Chapter 6: A Drink With No Name

Mickey nudged Santino awake at midnight.

Santino came up out of sleep fast, one hand already going inside his coat.

Then he saw who it was and stopped.

"Your cousin drinks his Negroni with lemon," Mickey said. "Made at the well. Five years. Every time but Thursday."

Santino looked at the napkins.

He didn't look surprised.

He looked like he had already figured that out.

"Don't say that to anyone," he said. "Not yet."

"Why not?"

"Because a drink he didn't order isn't proof. It's a story. And at that table, a bartender's story gets him killed."

Saturday night Mickey went back to work.

Santino had tried to talk him out of it in the car.

"Term two," Mickey had said. "My bar."

So at seven he tied his black tie in the staff room mirror and buttoned his cream waistcoat over a clean white shirt.

His hands knew where everything was.

That helped.

The staff had heard everything.

The server with the nose ring hugged him in the hallway so hard his ribs popped.

The two cocktail servers had filled his ice wells before he got there, big clear cubes, the way he liked them.

Somebody had taped a sign to his register in Sharpie: OUR BARTENDER. TOUCH HIM AND DIE.

"That's a little on the nose for this building," Mickey said.

"We voted," the server with the nose ring said.

Kelli came in at eight to set up a private dinner in the lounge.

Nobody said hello to her.

When she asked for a tray, the servers kept walking.

When she asked the barback to restock the champagne, he went into the walk-in and didn't come out.

The kid hadn't looked at Mickey once all night, either.

Mickey had noticed and filed it.
