Chapter 11: The Call

He woke when I sat up.

I had his phone in my hand with the screen lit and the name still on it.

"Don Ferrara," I said. "At six in the morning."

Adamo looked at the phone, then at me, and the sleep went out of his face.

"I can explain."

"Start."

He pushed himself up against the brick wall and rubbed his eyes with both hands.

"He called me in August," he said. "Not on this phone. He sent a driver to the yard with a number written on a napkin."

I said nothing.

"He wanted your brother gone. An accident on the pier, nothing anyone would ask about."

"He offered three hundred thousand dollars and the Narrows lanes for ten years."

The rain had stopped.

A tow truck chain rattled somewhere below, slow and bored.

"And you said no," I said.

"I said no to the driver's face," he said. "Then I sat on it for two days and told nobody."

I stared at him.

"I didn't warn him," Adamo said. "I didn't walk up that stair and tell Enrico his father had put a price on him."

"I told myself it wasn't my business."

"I told myself he'd survive because he's Enrico."

"In September your father cut my family out of the Narrows, and I figured that was the end of it."

"The end of it."

"I was wrong."

"You let him sleep over that bakery for two months with a price on him."

"Yes."

I was so angry my hands had gone numb, and under the anger was something worse, which was how easily I could have forgiven it.
