Chapter 18: The Stag Night
Piero's club sat on Hylan Boulevard behind a steel door with a brass plate that read Barbieri Lounge.
The wrapper in my pocket had the same name on it.
It was Friday night, one night before the wedding that wasn't going to happen, and the parking lot was full of Escalades.
I walked up to the door in my leather jacket and dark red lipstick, with my short hair slicked back.
Enrico walked on my left.
Adamo walked three paces behind us, with his hands in his pockets, because I had asked him not to stand beside me.
The waitress came last, in a plain black coat, with her braid tucked down her collar.
Her face was white, and she kept her eyes on my back.
"Say the word and we leave," I told her quietly.
"I know."
"Say the word."
"Open the door," she said.
The man on the door was one of the six from the sidewalk.
He saw me, and his eyes dropped to the lot behind us.
