Chapter 21: The Family Ring
The capos took their guests out of the tent, and the flap fell shut behind them.
It left my father, my brother and me in a white room full of empty chairs.
Adamo had gone only as far as the tent pole outside.
I could see his boots under the canvas.
My father sat at the plank where he had lost his name.
For a minute he did not seem to know what to do with his hands.
He took off his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
Without them he looked like any old man in a good suit.
"I wanted to say something to you both," he said, "and I find I have it ready, and it is wrong."
"Say it anyway," said Enrico.
"For peace."
He said it so simply that I almost laughed.
"Everything was for peace. Every year, every deal. I want you to know I believed it."
"I believe you believed it," I said.
His eyes lifted.
"Peace is when nobody is afraid of what happens next, Papa."
