Chapter 10: What I Watched
It rained all night, and by morning the study windows ran silver.
I came down at eight in a sweater and no shoes.
He was already there, standing at the window with his back to me, in yesterday's shirt.
He hadn't slept either.
"Ask me," he said.
"Where was it?"
"A parking garage on Frederick Street in Harrison. Third level, at two in the morning."
He didn't turn around.
"My father called me at midnight and told me to put on a coat."
I sat down in the chair across the desk, with my hands tucked under my thighs so he wouldn't see them shake.
"Tell me all of it," I said.
"Your father took money from the counting room for three months."
"My father found out on a Friday. He told no one for two days. He wanted me to learn what happens."
"Learn what."
"What a Don does."
His voice was flat.
"I was twenty-eight. He thought I was soft. Carmine Brusco held the gun. Two other men held your father's arms."
