Chapter 17: The Microphone
Julian did not shout.
He read the pink page again, standing in the empty stairwell, and then he folded it into a perfect square.
"Why?" he said.
"Because you were in a box, and I could open it."
"I would rather have stayed in the box."
"I know. That's why I didn't ask you."
He laughed, one short, helpless breath, and put the back of his wrist against his mouth.
"You are the most infuriating person I have ever met."
"You said that in September, too."
"In September I was wrong. It's much worse now."
He took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.
When he put them back on, something in his face had settled.
"Article eleven," he said.
"What?"
"I read the charter, Hattie. I had a lot of empty evenings."
"Article eleven says that if the president resigns, the office is vacant.
Then any student can be nominated from the floor at the next assembly."
"A withdrawn candidate can't run. But a nominee isn't a candidate."
I stared at him.
