Chapter 21: The Count
Presley stopped talking in the middle of a word.
It took her a long second to hear it, her own voice, bouncing off the back wall of the auditorium a half-beat late.
She looked up at the speakers.
She looked down at the black clip on her collar, and the red light blinking at her throat.
Then she looked at the four hundred students and their parents, who had not made a sound.
"That's not," she said. "That's not what I meant."
Her voice came out of the ceiling again, high and thin, and she heard that too.
Nobody in the hall had to be told what she had meant.
She pulled the microphone off her dress so hard that the fabric tore.
The headmaster stood at the edge of the stage, his mouth working, with no words in it.
"Ten minutes' recess is over," I said into the podium microphone, because someone had to say something. "I think we should vote."
There was a cough, a rustle, a single low whistle.
The vote was by paper ballot, and the faculty collected them from the aisles in two buckets from the janitor's closet.
