Chapter 4: Forbidden

Roark took the letter back and folded it very small.

Then he got into his truck.

I grabbed the door before he could shut it.

"Where are you going?"

"Across the river."

"To do what?"

"To put Kyler Yardley in it."

His voice was quiet and flat, and that scared me more than shouting would have.

The courier had already driven off.

Krista stood frozen on the shop step with an iced coffee in each hand.

"Listen to me," I said. "That letter isn't about Addison. It's about you."

"It's got her name on it."

"It's got her name on it so you'll do exactly this. You go over there and challenge him, that's a Brannigan Alpha attacking a Yardley Alpha on his own land. That's war."

"Then it's war."

"And the Council takes your seat for starting it. And then who's her brother? Nobody. Then they can do whatever they want to her."

His hands stayed on the wheel.

His knuckles were white.

"He wants you to swing," I said. "That's the whole point of him."

Somebody ran up the sidewalk behind me.

Addison, in her dog scrubs, with her braid coming loose.

"The receptionist saw a Council car stop at your truck," she panted. "What did they want?"

Roark didn't answer.

I didn't either.

Addison looked from his face to mine.

Then she reached past me and took the letter out of his shirt pocket.

She read it standing on the curb.

Her freckles went very dark against her skin.

"No," she said.

"Addie."

"No. Absolutely not. He bit a girl in front of her own pack and offered her leftovers. He is not putting his mouth on me."

"You have to have a mark, Addie."

"Then I'll die." She said it like she was telling him she'd skip dessert. "I mean it. I'll go sit by the river like Danica did, and if nobody I choose comes, I'll burn."
