Chapter 15: Day Three
On Wednesday night he came home with the lawyer's letter folded in his breast pocket, and I knew he'd read it forty times.
He read it again in the bedroom doorway.
"Day Three," I said.
"I'm aware."
"Give me the letter."
"Olivia, there's a deadline, and it's the twenty-fifth, and if we don't have an answer..."
"Give me the letter, Sebastian."
He gave it to me.
I put it in the red folder, put the folder on the dresser, and turned the folder face down.
"Now give me your hands."
He held them out, a little puzzled.
I took off his glasses.
I unbuttoned his shirt, and this time I didn't go slowly for his sake.
I went slowly for mine.
I pushed the shirt off his shoulders.
I ran my palms down the long muscle of his chest, over the scar I loved, to the belt.
He stood there and let me.
His breath was uneven.
"Tonight you don't touch anything until I say," I said.
"That's a new term."
"It's a Day Three term. Lie down."
He lay down.
