Chapter 17: Day Six
Cosima came to lunch on Day Six in her yellow trench coat.
She sat at the kitchen island.
"I was told to bring my witness face," she said.
"Is that it?"
"This is the one I wore at City Hall. It's mostly eyebrows."
Sebastian was at the stove with a wooden spoon, cooking an omelet he had made forty times.
He looked from his sister to me.
"What's happening?"
"Sit down," I said.
"The omelet..."
"Turn off the burner and sit down."
He turned off the burner.
He sat on the stool across from me, with his sister between us at the end.
He put both hands flat on the marble.
I took out my red folder.
I laid Amendment 5 in front of him, with my receipt across the top.
"The cooling-off ends tomorrow," I said.
"I know."
"You asked me to be exact, once, in a margin."
"I did."
"On the first of March you wrote that this marriage ends. I'm asking you, in front of my witness, what the date was for."
Cosima stopped chewing the cuticle she'd been working on.
Sebastian looked at the page.
He took off his glasses.
"You said reasons to be given in person," I said. "I'm a person. Go ahead."
"Olivia."
"Please."
He breathed in through his nose.
