Chapter 16: Tea With Darla
We were at Gran's front door in nineteen minutes, and Tobin did not use his key.
The flamingo in the Raiders jersey watched us come up the gravel.
Through the front window I saw Gran in her purple tracksuit, pouring tea.
Darla sat on the edge of the couch with a tissue in her fist and her pearls on.
Gran saw our shadows and lifted one finger.
Stay, the finger said.
So we stood in the dark hallway by the coat rack, where the doorway hid us.
"I'm so sorry to come at this hour," Darla said. Her voice shook. "I didn't know who else to turn to."
"Drink your tea," Gran said.
"I'm a mother, Mrs. Gault. You understand that."
"I raised a grandson alone from age nine. Yes."
"Then you know what it is to watch a child suffer."
"Which child?"
"My Trista," Darla said, and the tissue went to her eye. "She's twenty-five, she's pregnant, and the father has abandoned her."
"Colt Whitaker."
