Chapter 17: The Ladder
Jagger was still laughing when he walked out of the dining hall.
He left the chalk on the floor.
Nobody picked it up.
Nobody touched the board, either. By lunch, half the pack had come in to read it.
Three days later, Wanda took me to the Ladder.
"The rock's dry today," she said. "Won't be dry again till spring, maybe. We go now."
The old fire road climbs the back of the ridge to within a quarter mile of the notch.
Wanda drove it on her four-wheeler with her cane across the handlebars.
The strays rode behind her in the gray-haired warrior's wife's pickup, with Granger's chair roped in the bed and Granger in the cab.
The last quarter mile was scree.
The one-eyed warrior and the kid with the burned arm carried the chair up it between them, with Granger in it, swearing at every step.
"Left," Granger told them. "Your other left."
"Do you want to walk?" the kid said.
"Desperately."
At the top of the scree, the rock went straight up.
I'd seen the notch from the porch every morning for three weeks. It had looked like a bite out of a sandwich.
