Chapter 25: The Fire
I didn't find my boots.
I ran out the back door barefoot in his flannel shirt, into the snow.
The whole front of the barn was burning.
Flames ran up the old boards, and the CLINIC sign curled black on the door.
Somebody was screaming in the loft.
"The twins," I said. "Wanda's in Thunder."
The one-eyed warrior came out of the smoke with the kid with the burned arm over his shoulder, both of them coughing.
He put the kid down in the snow and turned straight back.
"Ladder to the loft's gone," he shouted. "The girls are up top."
A window in the hayloft burst outward.
Two small sandy wolves came flying out of it, one after the other, and landed in the snowbank below in a tangle of legs.
That left Wanda.
I pulled the flannel up over my mouth and went in.
The heat hit me.
Thunder's stall was at the far end. I went in under the smoke, bent double, counting stalls by touch.
One. Two. Three.
Four.
The stall door was shut.
Somebody had dropped the iron bolt on the outside.
I grabbed it.
