Chapter 7: The Freezer

The Escalade pulled away from the dock with its lights off.

I watched the video four times in the dark waiting room.

Augie, who Dom called his brother.

I sent the video to nobody. There was nobody to send it to.

So in the morning I set a trap for my husband.

He was at the stove in his shirtsleeves making eggs.

I sat at the kitchen island with my coffee.

"I have photos," I said.

The spatula stopped.

"Of what Nicky keeps in his gym bag. Every page of a notebook." I sipped my coffee. "They're in my grandmother's freezer. In a bag of fava beans."

He turned around.

"Thank you for telling me," he said, and turned back to the eggs.

That was all.

I went to work and waited.

She called at eleven.

"Daniela. There's a gorilla on my front step."

"What?"

"In a suit. Since nine o'clock. I gave him coffee and asked him in three times. He won't come in. He says Mr. Scarpa told him to watch the street."

I sat down on my stool in operatory one.

He hadn't gone near the photos.

He'd put a guard on my grandmother.

That night I waited for him in his study, in his own leather chair, with the lamp on.

He came in at nine and stopped in the doorway.

"There's nothing in the freezer," I said. "Is there?"

"I didn't look."

"You put a man on her step."

"If I'd heard it, someone else could have." He shut the doors behind him.

"Who else would hear it, Dom?"

He was quiet.

"You knew," I said. "About the pills. Before I said a word."

He sat down in the guest chair of his own study.

"Five weeks," he said.

My chest went tight.

"A boy at Holy Rosary's youth group died in March. Fifteen. A blue pill. I had it traced to a linen truck." He rubbed his eyes. "My son's linen truck."
