Chapter 19: Night Swim
Lukas looked at the hand on his shoulder.
Then he looked at his nephew.
"I remember every vow I ever made," he said. "Take your hand off me."
Tanner smiled and left it there a second longer.
Then he patted it twice and walked back up the dock.
He passed Greta at the last piling.
"Morning, Aunt Greta," he said.
She didn't answer.
His jaw was so tight she could see the muscle jump.
"Door?" she said quietly.
He gave a low, quiet laugh.
"Door," he said.
"Okay."
She leaned on his arm until the jaw let go.
The state crime lab took the boat the next week.
Then nothing happened for almost a month.
Greta put a new motor in the hoist with the prepaid storage money, and it stopped sounding like a dying cow.
She wrote Lukas a check on the first of August and handed it to him across the workbench.
He put it in a coffee can on the shelf without cashing it.
"That's not how checks work," she said.
"I'm saving them for when you stop being proud."
"Then you'll need a bigger can."
On the second Wednesday in August it was ninety degrees at eight at night and the shop was an oven.
