Chapter 22: The Showroom
Greta pulled the yard truck up nose to nose with the sedan and got out.
Margit's window slid down.
She was in a camel coat with her hair perfect at six in the morning.
"You had a party," she said.
She looked past the gate at the kettle and the burned circle on the concrete.
"I heard there was a fish boil. Seventy people. My customers, some of them."
"Some of them were your customers," Greta said.
Margit smiled.
She held a long envelope out of the window.
This time Greta took it.
"I'll save you reading it," she said. "Hollenbeck Marine would like to purchase Lindahl Boat Works. Both bays, the lift, the land, the name. Nine hundred thousand dollars. Five times what it's worth."
"And?"
"And you and my brother-in-law find a nice yard somewhere else. Michigan has a great many lakes. You'd be out of the county by Labor Day."
"By Tanner's wedding."
"By the first of September," Margit said. "It's a generous offer, Greta. It's the most money anyone in your family will ever see."
Greta looked at the envelope.
Then at Margit's gloved hand holding it.
