Greta lifted her head off his chest.
"We're already married," she said.
"I know. I was there. You put a hex nut on me."
"So what's the difference?"
"Last time you married me for a boat," Lukas said. "I'd like you to do it for me. On the dock. With your brother walking you down it."
She looked at him for a long time in the lamplight.
"Yes," she said. "Obviously yes. Go to sleep."
He didn't go to sleep for a long time, and he kept laughing at nothing in the dark.
Fifteen days later Tanner Hollenbeck stood up in the courtroom in Sturgeon Bay in a county jumpsuit.
He'd pleaded guilty that morning.
Homicide by intoxicated use of a vessel, nine years late.
Operating a vessel drunk, on the anniversary.
His hair had been cut short in the jail.
Without the tan and the smile he looked like any other man in orange.
The room was full again.
The woman in the gray cardigan sat in the front row, with Nils beside her.
