Chapter 6: I Do

Greta looked up the steps at Tanner for a long moment.

Then she took out her phone.

"What are you doing?" Kristi said.

Greta scrolled to the lawyer's number, pressed call, and put it on speaker.

She held it up so the whole top of the stairs could hear it ring.

It rang four times.

"Law office," the lawyer said, in his tired Friday voice.

"It's Greta Lindahl."

A pause. "Greta. I was going to call you about..."

"Who pays your invoices?"

The pause got longer.

Tanner smiled down at her, waiting.

"I'm not sure that's relevant to your brother's..."

"I'm sure," Greta said. "Who pays you? Yes or no, is it Tanner Hollenbeck?"

"I'd prefer not to discuss billing on a..."

"You're fired."

"Greta."

"You're fired. I want every page of my brother's file on my desk by Monday. Every page. If one sheet's missing, I'll file a complaint with the bar and read it out loud at the fish boil."

She hung up.

Tanner's smile had gone a little stiff at the corners.

"You just fired the only lawyer who'd take that case," he said.

"He never took it. You did."

She walked up the steps past him without looking at him again.

Lukas came up beside her.

He didn't say a word, but he held the door.

The clerk's office had a flag in the corner and a rubber plant.

The clerk took her fee for waiving the waiting period and stamped the form twice.

The judge wore reading glasses on a cord.

Tanner and Kristi came in and stood at the back, by the rubber plant.

Nobody had invited them.

"Rings?" the judge said.

Lukas took a thin gold band out of his suit pocket.

It was old and worn smooth on one side.

"It was my mother's," he said quietly.

She had nothing for him.
