Chapter 24: A Year and a Day
On the last day of the year and a day, Wenxuan woke before the sun and found his husband already looking at him.
The bed was new.
Dai had bought it in the spring, the largest in the capital, with posts padded in blue silk on the advice of the cook.
He had not said why.
Nobody had asked.
"You are staring," said Wenxuan.
"Yes."
"It is the last day."
"I know." The general reached out and moved a strand of hair off his face with the back of one scarred finger.
"I wrote nothing down. In case it is a trap."
"It is a form. They will ask. You say no," said Wenxuan.
"In a full sentence."
"In a full sentence."
Wenxuan stretched, and the quilt slid.
The general's eyes followed it down and came back up again, dark and warm and without any red in them.
In a year, Wenxuan thought, they had learned each other as well as two men can.
He knew the catch in that breathing when the man was pleased.
He knew the flat sound when he was pretending to be asleep.
He knew the exact weight of the arm that came across his ribs at night.
He knew a thousand things.
He had not guessed that there could still be one he did not know.
"Wenxuan," said the general.
"Mm."
"I want to ask you for something."
Wenxuan turned onto his side.
In a year the man had asked for the salt, and the lamp, and permission to build a second shelf.
He had not once asked for anything for himself.
"Ask," he said.
The general looked at the ceiling, and breathed, and the red began after all, slow and sure, from the collar up.
"I would like you to hold me," he said. "Not as I hold you. The other way."
"I do not know how to say it. I would like to be the one who is held."
Wenxuan did not say anything.
He did not trust his voice.
He put his arm across the broad chest and pulled until the great frame rolled toward him.
The general put his face in his neck and let out a long sound, the sound of a man laying down a sword.
