Chapter 17: Marigold

Honoria received me in the sunroom, with the glass walls black and the table bare.

She had not set out tea.

She sat in a straight chair with her cane across her knees, and she pointed to the chair opposite without a word.

"I have read my son's letter four times," she said.

"I thought you might."

"In forty years, my husband never signed his name to anything that cost him. My son did it in eleven minutes, on a Friday, to the whole board."

"He did it because I told him to."

"No," said Honoria. "You told him what it would cost. Doing it was his."

She tapped the cane once against the floor, a short, dry sound.

"Sit, Claire."

I sat.

"I will tell you three things, and I want you to hear all of them. First, I do not like you. You are not what I wanted for him, and I have not changed my mind."

"I appreciate the honesty."

"Second, I watched your face on that screen. You didn't look at him at all. You looked at your own hand."

I said nothing, because she was right.

"Third." She paused, and for the first time her voice was not a closed drawer. "I loved my husband very badly and I loved my son worse. I never said so to either of them. Do not repeat that."
