Chapter 21: My Choice

Freja's POV

I had practiced this on the drive over.

All of it left me when he opened the door.

He was in his shirtsleeves, with no jacket and no tie.

His eyes were plain silver, and he had stopped hiding anything.

I couldn't feel him anymore.

That was the strangest part.

For two weeks there had been a warm thread between us.

Now there was only a man standing in a doorway, and I had to read his face with my eyes.

"You signed," I said.

"You told me to."

"Your hand didn't shake."

"No."

"I watched it." My voice wobbled, and I let it. "I thought, he doesn't want to. He wants me to say no. And I stood there and I wanted to see whether you'd stop."

"I couldn't have stopped."

"Why?"

"Because you asked." He said it with no heat at all. "I'd have walked out of the Seven's hall and never come within a mile of you, if that was the choice. I meant it, Freja. I'd have lived with that."

He meant it.

I saw him mean it.

Every night since the first time we fell into bed I had lain beside him and told myself the bond was the only reason he looked at me that way.

I had told myself that when the thread broke he'd be glad to be free.

I had been braced for it.

I had been so sure.

He stood on his own front step with the thread cut, in the cold, and he looked at me exactly the same.
