Chapter 23: On His Own Feet
Nobody on the dock moved.
The floodlights hummed.
The water slapped the pilings under our feet, and behind us the rowboat knocked against the last post.
Forty feet of planks, and the end of them was nothing but black lake.
"On your knees," the man in the middle said. "All three."
He was older, with a grey crewcut, and he'd stood at the wall in the hall when they voted.
Deacon stepped in front of me.
Bowie stepped in front of me on the other side.
I could feel the bond pull tight between them.
"You know who I am," Deacon said.
"I know who you were, sir." The crewcut man didn't lower his gun. "You're rogue now. And she's banished. On this land she's anybody's."
"Then shoot me first."
"Deacon," I said.
I stepped out from between them.
My legs didn't want to do it.
I did it anyway.
"I'm not kneeling," I said. "Not on this dock."
"Miss, I've got orders."
"His mother bled on these boards," I said. "Twenty years ago. With your shop's silver in her. I'm not kneeling here for anybody."
