Chapter 22: The Council

Brand found me on the trough's edge an hour after the dome came down.

The square was still full of people too happy to go to bed.

He sat beside me with our son asleep on his shoulder, drooling on the scales.

"Six months," he said. He'd seen my face. "You're counting again."

"I never stopped."

"So what now?"

"Now it works," I said. "Now there's somewhere to go."

"For who?"

I looked east at the gold smudge.

"For whoever believes me in time."

He was quiet a while.

"You want to go in there," he said. "Into Haven."

"To the Council. In person. With the log."

"They'll laugh."

"Probably. Then nobody can say they weren't told."

He shifted the boy on his shoulder.

"Then I'm coming," he said.

"I know you are."

We went in on a Thursday, which was the day the Council sat in public.

Gran kept the twins. Sable kept Gran.

The Gate officer stamped us through himself, a visitor pass for me and a bonded-spouse tag for Brand.

"Don't let him bite anyone," he said to me.

"I never bite in public," Brand said.

The tunnel came out under the shield, and the air went soft and clean and dead.
