Chapter 27: The Gate Road
I was down the ladder before Brand let go of me.
"Trucks," I said. "All three. Now."
He caught my arm at the bottom.
"You're staying under the dome."
"I know that road. I know what's on it and when."
"Ember."
"An hour, Brand. The hollows are inside Haven in an hour. Then they come down the highway after whoever's running."
"Last time you went in that ditch alone," he said.
"So come with me."
He let go of my arm.
"Sable runs the dome," he said. "The kid from the collars drives the third truck. Gran keeps the twins."
We were out the gate in six minutes.
Three trucks, all lights on, the crew in the backs with rifles and blankets.
The gold of our dome fell away behind us, and the dark closed in.
I held Gran's rifle across my knees and watched the road.
At fifteen miles we met the first of them.
A man running on the shoulder, alone, in house slippers.
We pulled him up into the back and kept going.
At twenty miles there were dozens.
Then hundreds.
They came out of the dark in the headlights, families, old people, kids on shoulders, people in nightclothes with coats thrown over.
