Chapter 16: Rook Pays
Rook shoved Hiram to his knees in the middle of the glass room.
"Don't shoot," he told the men at the arch. "Look at my phone first."
He had taped it to a brass rack at eye level, its screen glowing.
A red dot pulsed in the corner of the screen.
Under it, a number was climbing so fast the digits blurred.
"That's Redfern's channel," Rook said. "Three seasons of followers. I went live at the cellar door."
The man in front lowered his rifle an inch.
"It's a bluff."
"Check your own phone."
His partner pulled out a phone, looked at it, and went pale.
"Eleven million," he said. "Eleven. They can see us."
"They can see your faces," said Rook. "And they can see what you're pointing at."
The rifles dropped one by one.
Nobody wanted to be the man on the screen with the gun.
Rook turned.
His left arm was cut from shoulder to elbow, and blood ran off his fingers onto the stone.
He didn't look at it.
"Ironwood's eight guards met me at the east gate," he said, to me, as if it were nothing. "They were polite about it."
"You're bleeding on the floor."
