Chapter 14: Mr. Arcuri
The first thing I saw was a square of ceiling with a water stain in the corner.
My head felt packed with wet cotton, and my mouth tasted of metal.
I turned my face toward the window and found a man in a chair.
He had his jacket off and his tie loose, and a blanket lay unfolded across his knees.
It was Vincent Arcuri.
He had not slept in days, and it showed in his face.
"Mr. Arcuri?" I said.
My voice came out hoarse.
He was on his feet before I finished the word.
"Gemma."
"Why are you in my room?" I tried to push myself up, and the room tilted. "Is something wrong with school? Did somebody call you?"
He stopped halfway to the bed.
I watched his face change, and I did not understand why.
"What's the last thing you remember?" he said quietly.
"I'm in the library," I said. "I'm trying to finish a paper on the Medici. It's October, and it's raining."
"Which year?"
I told him the year.
He closed his eyes for a second.
A nurse came in, saw that I was awake, and said, "There she is." She checked a monitor, shone a light into my eyes and asked me to say my full name.
"Gemma Sorrento."
"And who's the president?"
I told her, and she wrote something down.
"What's this?" She held up a plastic spoon from my tray.
"A spoon."
It came out easily, with no gap in front of it.
Vincent made a sound in his throat.
"Good," the nurse said. "Words are all intact. Some of the memory in the last few years may come back, and some may not. That's what we warned you about."
