Chapter 22: The Apology
Gemma's POV
The Orsini restaurant in Midtown was full that night, and nobody was eating.
The four Dons sat at the long table under the chandelier with their wives.
Their men lined the walls.
Vincent sat beside me with his left arm in a sling and the sleeve of his jacket cut open over the bandage.
The ER doctor had told him to stay in bed for a week.
He had told the ER doctor he would be back in an hour, and the doctor had looked at me.
I had said, "Let him go. I'm going with him."
Now I sat very straight in a green dress and kept my hands in my lap.
Francesca came in from the kitchen corridor with her father behind her.
She was in black.
Her blonde hair was pinned back and her red mouth was bare.
She had been crying, and she had fixed her face, and I could tell she had fixed it for him.
She stopped at the head of the table in front of the whole room.
"Say it," her father said.
"I'm sorry," Francesca said.
"All of it. Loud."
Her chin came up.
"Gemma Sorrento," she said, and the name shook only a little. "At my engagement dinner I called you a stray, in front of both our families, while you were sick."
"Go on."
"At the Staten Island party I threw a drink in your face because I was scared you'd take him. I wasn't scared of you. I was scared of the way he looked at you."
I felt Vincent's good hand tighten on my knee under the tablecloth.
"I said you'd faked it." Her voice dropped. "I believed Aldo. He told me you were an actress, and I wanted it to be true."
