Chapter 6: The Revolving Door
Vincent opened his own front door and stood in it.
"You're on my step," he said to Francesca.
"I'm on the step of the man who humiliated me." Her voice carried down the whole block. "Forty people watched you carry that girl out of my dinner."
"She was having a seizure."
"She was having a performance!"
I came up behind him and looked past his arm.
Francesca saw me, and her eyes dropped to my left hand.
I had not planned what I did next.
I held it up, with the plain gold ring catching the porch light.
"We were married this morning," I said. "At city hall."
She stared at the ring.
For a moment she did not look angry, only blank.
"You're lying."
"The certificate's in the safe," Vincent said. "I'll send your father a copy."
"My father will bury you."
"Your father can try."
"You don't understand." She came up one step, and the two men behind her shifted. "Everyone in the families knows we were engaged. If you walk away, I'm the girl who got dumped for the charity case. I'd rather die than be that girl."
"Then you shouldn't have called her that at dinner," I said.
Vincent glanced down at me.
I did not look at him.
"I was wrong to leave you at that table," he told Francesca. "I'll say so, to your face, in front of your father. But I won't marry you."
"Fine. Say it Sunday." Her chin came up. "My father's giving a party for the alliance, and he's not canceling it. You'll stand up in front of everyone and apologize."
