Chapter 28: Choose Your Blood
The Sandrelli boathouse stood at the end of a rotten pier, and Raffaele had learned to swim off it at six.
Now his father stood inside it with a gun in his belt and a girl by the arm.
Raffaele came through the side door with Gemma behind him and two captains at his back.
Six Orsatti men filled the room, and in a leather chair in the middle sat the old Orsatti Don, a stout old man with a cane across his knees.
The Orsatti heir lay on a cot by the wall, his thigh wrapped in bloody gauze.
Fiammetta had been shoved down beside him.
She was crying again.
"Raffaele," said Vittorio, brightly. "How good of you to come. I was just telling my friend how sorry I am about the harbor."
"You aren't sorry," Raffaele said.
"Let the boy speak," said the old Don.
Vittorio put his hand on his heart.
"Here is my offer. The four Albertini berths back to you, and the Pier Four lease, and five years of peace. You'll stand down your guns, and my son will stand down his."
"And the price?" said Gemma.
"One small thing."
The Don smiled at her.
"The girl. I'll give you her head, and you'll give me back my chair."
Raffaele's hand went to his belt.
"Careful," said Vittorio. "There are six guns in this room, and none of them are mine."
The old Don turned his heavy face toward Gemma.
He looked at her for a long time.
"You're the one," he said. "The wife."
"I am."
"Who stood in front of my son on the pier."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Gemma lifted her chin.
