Chapter 5: The Wrong Map

In the car home, Gemma found a phone in her clutch.

It was small and black, and it was not hers.

Rosanna had slipped it in during the hug in the ladies' lounge.

Gemma held it in her lap and said nothing, because Raffaele was two feet away, looking out of his own window.

At one in the morning the villa was quiet.

Raffaele's men were downstairs, playing cards in the kitchen, and his father's car had gone.

Gemma stood in the dark hall with her heels in her hand and her whole body hot.

She had a plan, and she did not like it.

If she told Raffaele about Rosanna, he would not believe her.

If she did nothing, Rosanna would find another way to get what she wanted, and Gemma would never learn what that was.

So she would give Rosanna a sheet, and let the sheet be wrong.

His study door was not locked.

A green lamp stood on the big desk, and the brown folder lay in the top left drawer, exactly where Rosanna had said.

Rosanna had known which drawer.

Gemma noted it and kept moving.

She spread the sheet under the lamp.

It was a list of harbor berths, with dates, delivery times and the names of trucks.

She took a pen from the desk and copied it onto a clean page, line by line, and she changed every time.

Midnight became four in the afternoon.

Berth nine became berth two.

She worked fast, and her hand began to shake, and she had to stop twice to cough into her sleeve.

When the fake was done, she put the real sheet back in its folder and the folder back in the drawer.
