Chapter 16: What Bran Carried
Teo came out into the yard with his shirt half buttoned and his sword in his hand.
He saw Bran's face and put the sword down on the wagon bed.
"Say it again," he said.
Bran stood up, which cost him, and held on to the wheel for his hip.
"Two autumns ago, in the week before the first frost, a Hall rider found me at Ash Bend," he said.
"He had a sealed order and a purse of gold.
Seven wagons of the Fourth's rations were stopped on the road there, and I was to take them off it."
Teo did not move.
"Off it where?"
"To the Hall's river barn at Marrow Cross.
The order said the Fourth was being pulled back, and the stores would follow them.
It said nothing of Sallow Ford.
It said, deliver to the barn and tell no man."
"You believed that."
"I believed the purse."
His voice cracked on the last word.
"I heard about the Fourth a month later.
Four hundred men.
I knew then, Teo, and I said nothing, and I drove the road again the next spring."
Teo crossed the yard and took Bran by the front of his coat.
