Chapter 14: Recovery
I picked up the matchbook.
Every match had been torn out but one.
On the inside of the flap, somebody had written in ballpoint: You first.
"That's not a clue," Alastair said behind me. "That's a man bragging."
"He's always bragging. That's how he got caught the first time."
The woman who ran the shelter was crying quietly in the doorway.
"There was a truck on the street around noon," she said. "Blue. I thought it was a delivery for the church."
"Blue box," I said. "Gold letters."
She nodded.
I sat down on the empty cot.
I shut my eyes and let the numbers come up.
Kesterson doesn't keep anything at the Port of Baltimore longer than a night. Too many cameras, too many customs men.
They keep it in Cumberland.
There's a drop yard off I-68 at exit 44, behind a tire shop, with a back fence along the railroad cut.
I pass it twice a week.
"Reefer R-12," I said. "Kesterson refrigerated trailer. It's been parked at the back fence of the Cumberland yard since last Sunday with its unit running."
