Chapter 19: The Courtroom
I hung up and looked down at Alastair.
He was awake now. He'd heard every word.
"A live witness to the sale," I said. "Three men were part of that sale."
"Lucius won't say it. The broker would rather die."
"That leaves the man in the wheelchair."
"He already got what he wanted."
"So find out what else he wants."
The troopers had taken him off the mountain on Sunday night, chair and all. He was in the county jail in Parsons.
I went to see him Monday.
He wanted cigarettes. And he wanted to be in the room when Lucius heard his voice.
The Tucker County courthouse was red brick with a clock tower, on the main street of a town smaller than the Kesterson ballroom.
On Thursday morning there were satellite trucks parked on the sidewalk in front of it.
The courtroom was full.
Reporters in the back rows. Truckers from the Cutter Stop along one wall in clean flannel, with their caps in their laps.
