Chapter 21: A Clean Referral

I brought the referral to the rehearsal in my back pocket, folded in quarters.

It was Friday evening, and Stanley's yard was full of folding chairs, a minister with a clipboard, and my mother.

Mom stood at the end of the aisle in her red cardigan and held up a whistle of her own.

Stanley had given it to her.

"Positions," she said. "Groom, here. Best man, there. Maid of honor, there. Not there, there."

"Which there?" I said.

"The one I'm pointing at."

Justin came across the lawn in jeans, with a case of sparkling water on one shoulder.

He set it down, kissed my cheek, and saw my face.

"What?"

I took the referral out and handed it over.

He scanned it quickly and sat down on a folding chair.

"Referred to Dr. Justin Hostetler," he said. "Reason: she won't be cured. Fine."

"Carol," he called, a little hoarse, "is this a joke?"

Mom came over and put her hands on her hips.

"It's a policy change," she said. "I used to have a rule that nobody touches my daughter in a doctor's coat."

"I remember."

"I've amended it. You may touch her in a doctor's coat, a sweater, or a tuxedo, provided you're good to her, and provided you do it when I'm not in the room."

"That's a reasonable policy."

"I thought so. I wrote it down."

Stanley walked up behind her and put his chin on her head.

"She wrote it down at three in the morning," he said.
