Chapter 15: The Dryer

Maricela's POV

On Monday morning I carried a basket of scrubs down to the laundry room off the carport, and Jakob carried the detergent.

He had not asked me for tomorrow.

It was a full day past tomorrow, and he had not asked me once.

He had made me coffee with his hair still wet and put the cup in my hand and gone down the hall without a word.

I loved him for that, and I was not ready to say so.

The laundry room was a concrete closet with a washer, a gas dryer and a bare bulb on a cord.

It smelled of bleach and warm lint.

I put the basket on the dryer, took out my phone and set it on the folding shelf.

I opened the Denver email, found the number at the bottom of it and held my thumb over the green button.

Jakob stood against the wall with the detergent bottle in his hand.

"You don't have to do this in front of me," he said.

"I know."

"Maricela-"

"I want you to hear it," I said. "No hiding. Your rule."

I pressed the button and turned on the speaker.

A woman answered on the second ring, bright and rushed.

"Denver Children's, Human Resources, how can I help?"

"Hi. This is Maricela Saldana," I said. "I signed an offer for the pediatric ICU, starting January fourth."

"Oh, Maricela, yes. Your relocation packet went out last month."

"Please don't send the rest," I said. "I'm calling to withdraw my acceptance."
