Chapter 18: Mananitas

At five that morning, under the dome of San Fernando Cathedral, the mariachis had sung Las Mananitas to the Virgin.

Erwin had pressed a small box into Jakob's hand.

It was his late wife's ring.

Now it was night, and the box lay in the inside pocket of a coat on a chair in a River Walk hotel room.

I stood on the balcony in a green dress with the rail cold under my forearms, and Jakob stood behind me.

Below us the river slid black and gold between the stone walls.

A barge went by with paper lanterns and a mariachi band in silver embroidery, and the trumpets rose off the water.

The band played to the couples on the bank.

On the next balcony, forty feet down the wall, someone's door was open and a television was on.

"Nobody can see us up here," Jakob said, close to my ear.

"Somebody can."

"Do you want to go in?" he said.

"No."

His hands settled on my hips.

They were hot through the thin cloth.

He gathered my skirt in his fists and drew it up, slowly, over my thighs and my ass, until it bunched at my waist.

I had worn nothing under it.

I had decided that in the cathedral, while the choir sang.

"Maricela," he said, low and ragged.

"Yes."

"You walked around the Alamo like this," he said.

"I walked around the Alamo like this."

"I'll remember it the rest of my life."

I laughed, and the laugh cracked into a moan, because his hand had slid between my legs from behind.

He found me wet, and he swore.

He circled my clit with two fingers, slow and firm, and my knees went to water.

I gripped the rail.

The trumpet on the river hit a high note.

I came the first time against his hand, with my forehead on the cold iron and my cry lost in the music.

He held me up with an arm around my waist.

"There she is," he said into my hair. "Again."

"I can't."

"You can."

He knelt on the tile behind me.

I felt his hands part me, and his breath, hot on the back of my thighs.
