Chapter 9: Dramatic

The detective from home called me back on Saturday morning at ten.

I had left four messages on the number my father mentioned, and I'd said my name and the word poisoned every time.

I took the call in the stairwell of the summer residence hall, where nobody could hear me.

"Miss Hartwell," the detective said. He sounded about fifty and very tired. "I was going to call you today, either way. I have two reports with your name on them."

"I know about my cousin's."

"Tell me yours first."

So I told him, the way the doctor had written it down.

The mousse. The sticker. One bite. The empty bag.

The 911 call at 8:41, and the call to my mother at 8:43.

The EpiPen in the dress pocket.

The baker, and the extra cup, and the sheet of stickers paid for in cash.

He didn't interrupt me once.

When I finished, I heard him put a pen down.

"That's a lot more than I had on Thursday," he said.

"What did you have on Thursday?"

"Your cousin's statement, and your mother's."

"What did my mother say?"

I heard paper turning.

"She says you've had a difficult year. That you've been anxious and moody. That you tend to exaggerate when you feel left out. And that on Saturday, you had a minor reaction at a party after a catering mistake, and then became upset and left."

"A minor reaction."

"Her words."

I put my hand on the cold wall.

"Did she say I called her?" I asked.
