Chapter 7: The File He Kept

Nate Gilmore knew his father had kept Dale's plea file, and he had kept that from me.

Brynn had left the welcome, but the relatives were still gathered near the tables.

I turned to Nate before anyone could start talking about the holiday.

'Why did you stand beside me without telling me your father handled Dale's plea?'

Nate's eyes moved to the relatives, then back to me.

'I thought I could tell you after the reception.'

'You knew before the scholarship reception.'

He nodded.

That was the answer.

My fingers closed around the table edge. The paper cover bent under my hand.

I had stood in front of my family and asked them to look at what Brynn did. Nate had known another piece of the story, and he had let me stand there without it.

'I was scared,' he said. 'My dad kept the file. I knew that before the reception.'

'You were scared of what?'

'Of my dad. Of your family hating me if I told you.'

I looked at the relatives who had watched Brynn leave.

Nate had chosen their approval over my right to know. He had done it while I was asking them to believe me.

'You let me face the people who hurt me while you kept their secret.'

His mouth tightened.

'I know.'

'No. You know now that I found out.'
