Chapter 17: One Chance on Camera
Ethan's POV
I wanted to shut the door on her.
Bridget stood on my step, soaked to the skin, in a pale dress that had cost more than my rent.
She was the girl who had filmed our wedding from the county office steps and laughed.
She was the girl who painted over her sister's sketch and cried when she was caught.
Claire stood beside me with her arms crossed and her face closed.
"Say what you came to say," Claire said.
"Can I come in?"
"No."
Bridget flinched.
"Mother found out about the roof," she said. "She's burning papers in the study. She told me to take the boxes to the incinerator behind the garage. I didn't. I took one."
She lifted a canvas tote bag off her shoulder.
It was heavy, and it was dripping.
I looked at it, and my chest tightened.
"What's in it?" I said.
"Her private files. From the safe behind Dad's portrait." Her lip shook. "I know what they are. I read them in the car."
"Why?" I asked.
She turned her wet face to me, and for the first time I saw how young she was.
"Because I was fifteen," she said. "The night after Dad's funeral I came downstairs for water. Mother and Mr. Tull were in the study. She had a pen, and a sheet of paper, and a signature she was copying. Over and over. He was holding the lamp."
Claire's arms dropped.
"You never told me."
"I never told myself," Bridget said. "She said I'd dreamed it. I let her."
"You let her for eight years."
"Yes."
Claire said nothing.
I watched her fight with it, and I knew what I wanted to do.
I wanted to take the bag and shut the door.
