Chapter 10: Midnight

At the door of the club hall on New Year's Eve, I gave Riccardo a small black remote and told him what it was for.

He looked down at it in his palm.

"You're wearing the other half?" he asked.

"I put it in before we left. It's tiny."

His eyes went to my red dress, to the hem, to the place under it.

"Rebelo."

"You use it when I look at you," I said. "Not before. If I don't look, you don't touch it."

"And if you look in front of my father?"

"Then you'd better be quick."

His throat moved.

He put the remote in his trouser pocket and offered me his arm.

The hall was loud and gold.

Streamers hung from the ceiling, and a band played at the far end.

Three hundred people from both families were drinking and arguing in two languages.

The wall between them had started to come down in November.

Now it was only a long table of Portuguese captains near the bar and a long table of Italian uncles near the stage.

Between them a lot of children were running.

My mother and Fortunato sat at the center in matching silver.

I found my place across from Riccardo, between my avó and a cousin.

Over the soup I looked at him once.

He went red to the ears and pressed his thumb down.

A low buzz started inside me, soft and steady, and I put my fork down very carefully and picked up my water.
