Chapter 15: The Dock Office

The Iannotti cold store stood on the Fox Point waterfront, three blocks of gray steel with refrigerated trailers backed up to its dock.

It was the building the war had been about.

I found the dock office at the end of the loading bay.

It was a square room with a window onto the freezer floor and a light still on.

A space heater glowed orange under a steel desk.

A cot stood against the wall with a gray blanket folded on it.

Riccardo sat at the desk in his shirtsleeves with a ledger open and a pen in his hand.

He had three days of beard, and his eyes were red.

He stood so fast the chair rolled back into the wall.

"Rebelo," he said.

"Sit down."

He didn't sit.

"I said sit."

"I know what you said." His voice was hoarse. "I'd rather stand."

I closed the door behind me and put my back against it.

The heater ticked, and the freezer compressors hummed through the floor.

"New rule," I said.

He waited.

"No orders. Nothing you do in my bed is because I said. If you kneel, it's because you want to kneel."

"All right," he said.

"If you stop, you stop. If you say no, I want to hear it."

"I said it in the car."

"I heard you." I pushed off the door. "Come here."

His mouth twitched.

"Is that an order?" he said.

I opened my mouth, and shut it.

"Both," I said.
